High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classrooms
At Ben Venue Public School, evidence-informed classroom practices support students to grow their knowledge, skills and understanding from their existing developmental point. Students and teachers work together to identify and work towards next steps in learning, empowering students as leaders of their learning. This approach supports the extension of high performing and gifted students in our classrooms.
Across our school

Beyond the classroom, our school provides extension for high performing students in a number of areas, including:

  • a broad performing arts program, including weekly music education for all student, three school choirs, orchestra, dance groups, opportunities to enter the local Eisteddfod and Armidale Community of Schools combined performance evening
  • co-curricular academic opportunities such as chess, science and art extension camps and da Vinci decathlon
  • leadership development opportunities, including our student buddy program, Year 1-6 Student Representative Council and inclusive Year 6 Student Leadership Team
  • extension groups in both literacy and numeracy
  • a wide range of PSSA and interhouse sport.
Statewide

Our students also participate in a range of statewide opportunities for high potential and gifted extension, including:

  • The Premiere's Debating Challenge (Ben Venue were 2025 Regional Champions)
  • The Multicultural Public Speaking Competition
  • KidsLit Quiz
  • PSSA sporting opportunities
  • Opera House Choir
  • BandLink
  • PULSE Alive
